Tampere Academic Symphony Orchestra (registered association)

Founded in spring 2003 Tampere Academic Symphony Orchestra (TASO) is the first student symphony orchestra in Tampere. TASO provides a great opportunity for local university students - and others interested – to play in a full symphony orchestra. The orchestra was built on the string orchestra TYVI (Tampereen yliopiston viulistit) which had started its journey in 1998. For the first ten years the symphony orchestra was called ‘Tampereen yliopiston sinfoniaorkesteri’ (Tampere University Symphony Orchestra). TASO consists of approximately 70 enthusiastic musicians who perform together at least twice every year.

Ever since 2003 the conductor Kimmo Tullila has also held the post of Music Director at TASO. Under his leadership the orchestra has successfully performed a number of orchestral masterpieces. TASO has also collaborated with many prominent Finnish artists and performed in Helsinki, Turku, Jyväskylä, Seinäjoki, Jämsä and of course Tampere. In 2009 the Student Union of University of Tampere granted TASO with ’Vappulakki’ award in recognition of its years-long work for student culture.

Despite the high artistic goals TASO’s strengths remain in the genuine enthusiasm and commitment of its members. Being amateur musicians, the love for music is what drives us to do this.
